Reading conditions helps you plan range, route, anchoring and the safest time to turn around.
Use a marine forecast
A general weather app may show temperature and rain while missing the information that matters on the water.
Use the official Bureau of Meteorology marine forecast to check:

Conditions throughout the planned ride
Check the forecast before leaving and continue monitoring it during the trip.
A forecast describes a broad area, not every metre of water. Local headlands, channels, coastal bars and storm cells can create conditions that are worse than the general forecast suggests.
Windy is one of our favourite apps for visualising wind direction, swell and changing weather patterns. Use it as an additional planning tool, but continue checking official Bureau of Meteorology forecasts and maritime warnings.
Wind changes more than comfort
Wind direction controls which shore is sheltered and where chop builds. A run with the wind behind you can feel easy, then become slower and wetter on the return into it.

Plan the return leg using the forecast wind at that time, not the calm water you see at launch.
Swell and chop are different
Swell is organised wave energy that may have travelled a long distance. Chop is shorter and more closely tied to local wind. They can arrive from different directions, producing confused water that makes speed and balance harder to manage.
Reduce speed before the ride becomes uncontrolled. A slower, deliberate line is usually better than repeated hard landings.

Tidal current can also become stronger around channels, points, bridges and river mouths.
A route that was open on the way out may be shallow or inaccessible on the return. Do not rely only on yesterday’s GPS track or another rider’s route.
Check the official Bureau of Meteorology tide predictions for your riding area during the planning stage.
Tide predictions are not the same as actual water levels. Wind, waves, atmospheric pressure and local conditions can also affect the water you encounter.
Bars need separate judgement
Coastal bars can become dangerous when swell, wind and an outgoing tide combine.
Maritime Safety Queensland advises against attempting a bar crossing in bad weather, heavy swell, strong wind or unsafe run-out tide conditions. Review its official coastal bar crossing guidance before planning a crossing.

Watching another vessel cross is not proof that the conditions are suitable for you or your PWC.
Weather affects fuel range
Chop, headwind, current, added load and repeated acceleration can increase consumption. Range estimates based on flat-water cruising may not hold. Build a reserve into the plan and turn around before the display forces the decision.
Conditions affect anchoring
Wind and current determine how the ski sits and how much load reaches the anchor. Allow enough room and scope, account for the tide rise and check the ski is holding. Keep the anchor line clear of the intake during deployment and retrieval.
Visibility deserves its own check
Rain, glare, fog and darkness reduce the time available to see other craft, markers and debris. Slow down, maintain a proper lookout and carry the required lights or signalling equipment. If visibility is below what the ride needs, wait.

How much wind is too much for jet skiing?
There is no single number for every rider, ski and waterway. Direction, fetch, current, experience and distance from shelter all matter. If the conditions exceed your skill or the craft's safe operation, postpone the ride.
Is high tide always safer?
No. More depth may improve access, but current, swell and local hazards still matter. Check the waterway and forecast as a complete picture.
Why is the return trip rougher?
Wind, tide and storm development can change during the ride. The return direction may also put the ski directly into wind or chop.
