Jet Ski Intake Blocked? What to Do on the Water

You pull the throttle. The engine revs, but the ski shudders, cavitates or barely moves. Weed, rope, fishing line or other debris may be restricting water flow through the intake or pump.

The first move is not more throttle. Back off, get the ski stable and work through the problem safely.

Signs your jet ski intake may be blocked

  • Engine speed rises without normal acceleration

  • The ski vibrates or shudders under load

  • Thrust is weak, inconsistent or missing

  • A new cavitation sound appears after crossing weed or debris

  • You saw rope, line or vegetation pass under the hull

These signs can also point to pump, impeller, wear-ring or driveline damage. Treat an intake blockage as a likely cause, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

What to do immediately

  1. Release the throttle and move away from traffic or hazards if the ski still has controlled drive.

  2. Shut the engine down as soon as it is safe.

  3. Remove the safety lanyard and secure the key away from the controls.

  4. Account for every rider and keep the ski stable.

  5. Check the surrounding water before entering it or reaching below the hull.

Do not keep revving the engine to clear the blockage. If rope or line is wrapped around the shaft, more power can pull it tighter and increase the chance of damage.


Can you clear a blockage by rocking the ski?

Loose weed may sometimes fall away after the engine is shut down and the ski settles. You can inspect from a safe position and gently move the craft if conditions allow. Do not roll or tip the ski unless the owner manual provides the correct direction and procedure. Incorrect rolling can send water where it should not go.


Why reaching in with your hand is a bad plan

The intake and pump area can contain sharp debris, damaged metal or tensioned line. Visibility is poor and the space turns around a corner. Even with the engine off, putting your hand into a confined cutting area is an unnecessary risk.


Using an intake recovery tool

Occasionally if there is a small piece still wedged between the impeller and pump lining, you can start your ski and it may push through, just note i would not suggest this if it is rocks or anything solid, more so if it was soft weeds or rope. 

Never force a tool against the impeller, wear ring or intake grate. If the debris will not move, arrange a tow or recovery rather than causing pump damage offshore. 


Four Ways to Access a Blocked PWC Intake

If the water is rough, visibility is poor or rope is tightly wrapped around the driveshaft, arrange a tow or professional assistance.

1. Recover the PWC onto its trailer

If you are close to a boat ramp and can safely return to shore, recovering the PWC onto its trailer is usually the best option.

Once the PWC is properly secured, inspect the intake grate from underneath. This gives you better visibility, a stable working position and more control when using the Jet Tech Intake Recovery Tool.

Trailer access is particularly useful when rope or other material has become wrapped around the driveshaft.

2. Beach the PWC and carefully position it on its side

If a suitable boat ramp is not available, move the PWC onto a calm, soft beach. With help from several capable people, carefully position the craft on its side so you can access the intake grate.

Remove passengers and loose equipment first. Follow the handling guidance in your PWC operator’s manual and support the craft securely to avoid personal injury or damage to the hull, handlebars and controls.

Once the craft is stable, inspect the intake and use the recovery tool to remove the obstruction.

3. Inspect the intake from underneath the PWC

In calm, clear and protected water, an experienced swimmer may be able to inspect the intake while the PWC remains upright.

Turn the engine off, remove the safety lanyard and have another person steady the craft. Wear goggles so you can clearly identify the obstruction before using the tool.

This approach is better suited to lighter blockages, including:

  • Weed

  • Fishing line

  • A small piece of rope

  • A single loose object

It may not provide enough access for thick anchor rope or material wrapped tightly around the driveshaft. Do not swim beneath a PWC in surf, strong current, poor visibility or an area with passing watercraft.

4. Invert the PWC only as a last resort

If you are offshore and cannot reach the intake safely using another method, carefully inverting the PWC may provide access. This should be treated as a last resort.

Incorrectly rolling or righting a PWC can allow water into the engine or cause other mechanical damage. The correct procedure and direction vary between makes and models. Always follow the rollover decal on the craft and the instructions in your operator’s manual.

For example, Yamaha instructs riders to stop the engine and right applicable WaveRunner models in the direction specified by the manufacturer. Sea-Doo riders should check the rollover label fitted to their particular craft rather than assuming the same direction applies to every model.

Keep the PWC inverted for the shortest possible time. Clear the obstruction, right the craft immediately using the specified direction and follow the manufacturer’s post-capsize procedure before restarting it.

Choose the Safest Access Method

The best method is not always the fastest one. Use the trailer whenever it is practical and assess the conditions carefully.

How to reduce the chance of another blockage

Scan ahead for weed mats, floating rope and fishing activity. Keep clear of anchor lines and avoid running the pump in very shallow water. At the ramp, manage your own ropes so they cannot drift beneath the ski. A little awareness prevents plenty of awkward swimming.
