How to Install Jet Ski Traction Turf Properly
Traction turf changes how a jet ski feels underfoot, protects high-wear areas and can clean up an older deck. The installation itself is straightforward, but the adhesive only gets one clean chance to bond properly. Most problems start before the backing is removed.
Take your time with surface preparation, templating and alignment. Once those are right, sticking the turf down is the easy part.
Before you order
Confirm the exact make, model and year of your PWC. Deck shapes and panel layouts can change between generations that look similar, so do not assume a template from another model will line up correctly.
Also check whether the turf is supplied as a pre-cut kit or as a sheet that needs to be templated and cut. Jet Tech Traction Turf is supplied in 2.4 m x 0.6 m sheets, allowing you to template the material around your own ski. Jet Tech recommends two sheets for full-ski coverage.
If the ski already has factory turf or an older aftermarket mat, inspect what is underneath before starting. Old adhesive, damaged paint, uneven repairs or contamination all need to be dealt with before the new turf goes down.

Avoid metal scrapers that can gouge paint, fibreglass or plastic. Test any cleaner in an inconspicuous area first and follow the PWC manufacturer's surface-care advice.
How to install jet ski traction turf
Step 1: Remove the old turf and adhesive
Peel the old turf away slowly and use a plastic scraper where needed. Warm conditions can make older adhesive easier to lift, but avoid excessive heat that could damage paint, plastic or composite surfaces.
Remove the remaining adhesive rather than leaving raised patches underneath the new turf. Any old glue, wax, polish or dirt left behind can reduce the amount of clean surface available for the new adhesive to contact.
This is often the longest part of a traction turf installation. That is normal. A clean, even base is worth the extra time.
Step 2: Clean and completely dry the deck
Once the old adhesive is removed, clean the deck thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. For general pressure-sensitive adhesive preparation, 3M recommends clean, dry bonding surfaces and notes that an appropriate isopropyl alcohol and water mixture is commonly used for surface preparation.
Always follow the instructions for the turf and confirm that your chosen cleaner is compatible with the specific deck material and finish. Do not apply the turf while cleaner, moisture, dust or residue remains on the surface.
Step 3: Dry fit every piece before removing the backing
Lay the full kit or your cut pieces onto the ski with the adhesive liner still attached. Check the gap around every edge, the direction of the diamond pattern and the clearance around hinges, fasteners, storage lids and moving panels.
If you are cutting your own pieces from sheet material, template first rather than cutting directly against the ski. Leave deliberate, consistent spacing around moving parts and edges instead of trying to force the foam into every gap.
Use small pieces of masking tape as alignment marks. On larger sections, a tape hinge through the centre can help hold the turf in position while you apply one half at a time.
Step 4: Apply one section at a time
Start with the piece still held in its dry-fit position. Peel back a small amount of the liner, align the exposed edge and press it down lightly. Continue removing the backing gradually while smoothing the turf into place.
Work from the centre outward where possible to reduce trapped air. Do not stretch the EVA foam to make an edge line up. Stretching one section can distort the pattern and move the opposite edge out of position.
If a large piece is obviously misaligned, stop early rather than continuing to press it down. Repeatedly lifting and re-sticking pressure-sensitive adhesive can reduce the quality of the final bond.
Step 5: Apply firm, even pressure
Once the piece is positioned correctly, roll the entire surface firmly and evenly. Spend extra time on corners, narrow sections and outer edges.
Pressure-sensitive adhesive relies on good adhesive-to-surface contact. 3M's guidance for PSA-backed gripping materials specifically recommends firm, even application pressure to maximise contact and adhesion. Simply placing the turf onto the deck is not enough.
Step 6: Give the adhesive time to bond
Once all sections are installed, keep the ski dry and out of use for the bonding or curing period recommended for the adhesive system. Temperature and moisture can affect installation performance, so avoid fitting turf in a cold, wet driveway immediately before a planned launch.

How to look after jet ski traction turf
Rinse the turf after saltwater use and clean it with products suitable for EVA closed-cell foam. A soft brush can help lift sand and grime from the diamond-cut grooves without damaging the surface.
Avoid harsh solvents, sharp tools and concentrated pressure directly against turf edges. During normal washes, inspect corners and narrow sections for damage or lifting so you can deal with a problem before water and grit work further underneath.
